Can You Feel the Heat?

Climate change

People might notice that the summers of today are very different to how it was twenty years ago. Before, it was safe to go out even at hours when the sun is shining brightly. Unfortunately, in the present, exposing yourself at the sun’s peak hours means that you are also exposing yourself to its ultraviolet rays. These ultraviolet rays can cause harm to your body. In addition, the heat itself can also be a significant concern. This concerning change in temperatures is caused by global warming and climate change.

In July of 2021, The Guardian released an article stating statistics on heat-related deaths. In line with this, it is concerning that the data has shown that “extreme temperatures kill 5 million people a year with heat-related deaths rising”.

But with this, how does climate change cause heat waves?

Humans are causing the emission of greenhouse gases. These gases are known to cause extreme weather events and are also linked to heatwaves. These gases have been known to make heat waves last longer and make them more intense. In addition, it also increases the frequency of heat waves.

Who Are at Risk?

Everyone is at risk from heat waves and extremely hot temperature. However, there are those who are more at risk than others.

  1. The elderly, infant, toddlers, and people with chronic conditions
  2. Women who are pregnant
  3. People who work outdoors, people who work in hot conditions are places, and people who do not have access to an air-conditioning system
  4. People who are doing strenuous activities especially in places that are not ventilated properly

With this, it is important to stay hydrated and staying in well ventilated areas. In addition, it is also important to address the root cause of the issue and do something about it. It does not matter if what a person does is a small gesture. The cumulative small gestures will surely end in a huge impact that can possibly help the Earth and the future of the society.
