Advantages and Disadvantages of Dermal Lip Fillers

Have you ever looked at a celebrity on TV and wished that you too could achieve the same plump full lips as them? Dismissed the idea thinking that they must cost a fortune to obtain?

Many people are shocked to discover that their dream lips are only a quick trip to their local cosmetic clinic away, cost far less than you might expect, and are incredibly low risk compared to other more invasive procedures.

A couple of injections every 6-9 months is all it takes for you to achieve stunning full lips that will enhance the aesthetic of your face in a natural looking way.

Before you proceed with any cosmetic treatment, however, it is essential that you are fully aware of all the potential pros and cons and your doctor should run you through all of these before lip enhancement proceeds.

To give you a bit of a heads up, we have put together this useful guide to some of the most important factors to consider when getting a lip filler treatment.

lip fillers

Advantages of lip fillers

Impressive results with little downtime

The results of lip fillers are visible extremely quickly following their injection and any side effects will subside within just a couple of weeks. After this time the filler will have bonded to the lip tissue and have time to expand giving you the plump appearance you were looking for just days after visiting the clinic.

In comparison, surgical alternatives to lip fillers can take much longer to heal and you will experience far more discomfort during this time.

Fast procedure

At our Glasgow clinic lip filler treatments take under an hour in most cases with no general anaesthetic required. In fact, many of our patients don’t even take the day off from work in order to have them and you can go about your day as normal once again from the moment you leave the clinic.

This is an extremely pleasant contrast to surgical cosmetic treatments where you can be required to spend many weeks at home recovering before enjoying the effects.

Lip fillers can be dissolved

Lip Fillers before and after Glasgow

One of the biggest benefits of dermal fillers used as part of lip enhancement and in other areas of the face is that they can be dissolved if required.

On very rare occasions, lip fillers can gather in certain areas of the lip and cause lumps to form. These can easily be dissolved using Hyalase, an enzyme that causes hyaluronic acid, the acid used in many dermal fillers to break down.

This reversable effect provides great reassurance to those who are nervous about getting lip enhancement work as they know that if the worst comes to the worst they won’t be left with an unbalanced or unnatural appearance for many months to come.

Lip fillers are not permanent

If you are not quite sure about how lip fillers have made you look they will dissolve naturally after around 6-9 months. At this point you will be able to make the decision about whether to return to the clinic of more treatment or not.

We find that the vast majority of patients are delighted with how their lip fillers turn out but they are not for everyone, and this temporary nature provides valuable peace of mind to first time patients.

Disadvantages of lip fillers

Repeat treatments are required

Funnily enough, the firs disadvantage of lip fillers is the same as the last advantage we mentioned. Whilst if you are unhappy with your fillers, the fact they only last around 1 year at most is a relief, most people are absolutely delighted and want the effects to last far longer.

In order to maintain your fabulous new look, you will need to return to the clinic every so often for a repeat treatment, but luckily this will just as simple as it was the first time. The exact length of time between treatments will depend on the individual themselves but will normally be in the region of 9-12 months.

Side effects do exist

The side effects associated with hyaluronic acid-based lip fillers are minimal as this is a naturally occurring substance in the human body and the risk of an allergic reaction is extremely low.

However, there are a few potential risks to be aware of including filler accidentally spreading to non-target areas of the face (easily reversible using Hyalase) and some minor bruising or redness around the injection site that will subside after a few days.

If you do experience any more serious side effects such as bleeding or severe swelling, contact a doctor immediately as this could be a sign that your body is rejecting the filler for a certain reason and may indicate a more serious underlying issue.
